Written by gardenguy on February 14, 2012

Although tree bark, form, and evergreen foliage generally can certainly liven up the winter garden, there is probably nothing that cheers us in the middle of winter like a splash of color. our daytime temperatures have ranged from near 70 to the high 40′s. There have been days with bright blue skies and days where [...]

Share Retweet Garden Blog – a Double Walled Gardener’s View March started off raw, the starlings moving in crowded eddies at dusk, evenings beside a smoky wood burner, tying in roses during the day; but now the weather has turned generously warm and there is the scent of hyacinths –some were left over last year [...]

February is about the time of year when the little reminder notes really start to pile up, when sending a barrage of e-mails to myself seems an inefficient system compared to the search capabilities on my blog, a feature I use constantly. so just a warning that any future posts labeled “Journal” will most likely [...]

GARDENING: Hellebores are stars of the winter garden

Written by gardenguy on February 9, 2011
Categories: helleborus

The longer I garden in MetroWest Boston, the more I appreciate the importance of winter interest in the garden. While evergreen trees and shrubs provide structure in the garden, it’s wonderful to see the emergence of a perennial flower bud from the ground shortly after Christmas – the hellebore! sometimes referred to as 'Christmas Rose' [...]

Cool Plants: Allium thunbergii ‘Ozawa’

Written by gardenguy on February 8, 2011
Categories: helleborus

Plants that actually reach their peak in October, at least in this part of the country, are few and far between, making them a real treasure to gardeners and garden visitors alike. one of my favourites is Allium thunbergii ‘Ozawa’ for its near electric-violet flowers in loose “balls” called umbels. It is a dwarf variety [...]

Written by gardenguy on February 5, 2011
Categories: helleborus

Beautiful hellebores also have dark side

Her inquiry, and because the hellebore, aka Lenten or Christmas Rose, is beginning to put on a show right now, prompted me to delve into the history of this unassuming little favorite for the winter garden – and when I did I found it had a darker side. In ancient times it was used as [...]
